The tomahawk chop gesture has drawn controversy over its reference to Native American tradition.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred mentioned on Tuesday that the Braves had the approval of the Japanese Band of Cherokee Indians, who’re native to the area the workforce performs in.
“The Native American group in that area is wholly supportive of the Braves program, together with the chop. For me, that’s type of the tip of the story. In that market, we’re making an allowance for the Native American group,” Manfred mentioned.
The principal chief of the Japanese Band of Cherokee Indians, Richard Sneed, mentioned that Native communities have higher issues to fret about than celebrating sports activities followers.
“I’m not offended by anyone waving their arm at a sports activities recreation. I’m simply not. If anyone is, that’s their prerogative, it’s their proper. They are often offended … I don’t know very many — perhaps one or two — from my tribe who say, ‘Yeah, I don’t like that.’ However on the finish of the day, we’ve bought greater points to cope with,” Sneed defined.
